The Chinese Shar-Pei is a medium to large-sized working breed originally used for guarding, hunting, and herding. Unfortunately, the breed’s inherent strength and protective nature were exploited and the breed was later used for dogfighting. They nearly went extinct in the 20th century but made a comeback as popularity rose. Fortunately, in modern times, they’ve earned a much-deserved place as a devoted family companion.
Although best known for their wrinkled appearance, the Shar-Pei temperament is affectionate, loving, intelligent, alert, reserved, and courageous. They are also versatile and can even adapt to apartment living. However, your neighbors might not appreciate this breed’s barking tendencies. Novice pet parents should also beware, as these dogs need plenty of firm, consistent training, which won’t be easy with their natural stubborn tendencies. French Bulldogs may be small in stature, but they are packed with personality. Typically standing between 11 to 13 inches tall and weighing 16 to 28 pounds, they are sturdy, muscular little companions. Their compact size makes them one of the best breeds for apartment or city living, as they don’t need a huge amount of space to be happy. What’s fascinating about Frenchies is how quickly they grow during their first few months of life. By six months old, they already look like miniature adults, though they continue to fill out and gain muscle until about 18 months. Despite their stocky build, they are gentle lap dogs at heart and thrive on human companionship more than long runs or outdoor space.

The Chinese Shar Pei, on the other hand, is noticeably larger, giving off a more commanding presence. Adults usually stand 18 to 20 inches tall and weigh between 45 to 60 pounds, making them a solid medium-sized breed. Their deep chest, strong legs, and famous wrinkles give them a noble look, but under all that loose skin is a muscular, powerful dog. Shar Pei puppies grow at a steady pace, reaching much of their height by their first birthday, but they continue to mature and gain strength until around two years of age. What makes them so interesting is that their wrinkled skin often makes them appear bigger than they really are, giving them a unique, almost bear-like look as puppies. While they adapt well to apartment life if exercised daily, they truly enjoy having more room to stretch, play, and explore.
